C’River Super
President Muhammadu Buhari has applauded the Cross River State government’s commitment to its 260km super highway project, noting that it will boost Nigeria’s economy.
This is even as he expressed hope that the project will not only link the southern and northern parts of Nigeria, but also the Central African region.
The president said this at the groundbreaking ceremony of the dual carriage project site in Obung village, yesterday in Akamkpa area of the state.
While taking over the mantle of leadership on 29th May, 2015, Governor Ben Ayade had promised to embark on two signature projects which include a super highway and deep seaport in the state.
Buhari said: “When completed, this road will start from the seaport and terminate in the boundary between Cross River and Benue states.
“This road, no doubt, will expand the frontiers of our economy by providing countries like Niger Republic and Chad an alternative access to the seaport.
“It is our expectation that in turn, this will open the windows of economic opportunities for the people of Cross River State and Nigeria as a whole.”
Earlier in his address, Governor Ben Ayade said the road will not only link Cross River and the northern part of Nigeria, but also serve as an evacuation corridor for the state’s deep sea project.
While lauding Mr. President’s magnanimity towards the project, Ayade noted that when completed, the road will also reduce the travel time from Calabar to the northern part of the state from six hours to one hour.
The governor, who described the road project as a “digital highway”, said it was conceived in order to reconstruct a new means of production line for the state’s economy.
Stressing the economic importance of the road, he said its derivables will help the state reduce its dependence on the monthly federal allocation.
“This dream has a basis, a source, a tap root. That tap root was based on an economic model, the PPP model, the model that will create an income profile that will not be dependent on the federation, but the strategy ultimately is to decouple the state from dependence on the federal allocation”, he said.
The colourful occasion, which was almost marred by a heavy downpour, attracted the governors of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Emmanuel Udom, his Imo State counterpart, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, former governors Donald Duke and Liyel Imoke of Cross River State.
FG Plans Crisis Centre To Counter Extremist Teachings – Osinbajo
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo hinted yesterday that the federal government was planning to establish a crisis communication centre that would provide information that would help in countering violent extremist ideologies, especially in the North East.
Speaking when he received the US Special Envoy on Counter Terrorism Communication, Rashad Hussain, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Osinbajo said it is critical to define and disseminate positive narratives that expose the evil of terrorism, asserting the ultimate victory of good over evil.
