The nullification of the election of Governor Nyesom Wike, is expected to have several ripple effects, one of which is the ministerial confirmation of Rotimi Amaechi.
During his screening at the Senate last week, Amaechi, a former Rivers governor, was not questioned by the Senators of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The PDP Senators had refused to question him until the reports by the Committee on Ethics Privileges and Public Petitions, on the petitions submitted against Amaech, was ready.
With the screening and confirmation of the remaining ministerial nominees, scheduled to continue today, Tuesday, October 27, PDP senators, feeling aggrieved over the unfavourable tribunal rulings in Rivers and Akwa Ibom state, are expected to be hostile.
PDP senators are going to try and scuttle the confirmation of Amaechi as minister, for a number of reasons.
The senators of the opposition party are still nursing the grudge of Amaechi’s defection to the APC in 2014, and the recent tribunal rulings have only made the wound deeper.
The lawmakers are also said to be perturbed that if Amaechi is confirmed as minister, he would become too powerful and much more influential than he is at present.
With a rerun election seeming likely in Rivers state, the senators believe that Amaechi’s confirmation would directly have an effect on the polls.
